Let’s imagine the significance of the California State Parks for a moment. 280 state parks, 340 miles of coastline, 15,000 campsites, and 67 million visitors annually. More than 15 years ago, a distance learning program was created to provide video access for learning. Parks Online Resources for Teachers and Students (PORTS), informs K-12 educators in teaching students about California’s state parks. The program uses video conferencing to offer virtual field trips!
Fortunately, this program is free to schools and educators. In order for the program to continue running, it must utilize affordable tools to create these experiences.
Essentially, the challenge was figuring out a way for over 6 million K-12 students to become educated on the topic of California State Parks. There was obviously no way for that many students to visit the parks. Think about school schedules, transportation, and parental agreeance!
If you haven’t noticed, collaborative learning has become very important in today’s world. PORTS was searching for a way to show kids the significance in remote parks in desolate locations. Some locations are just not accessible for anyone, let alone K-12 students. Executives at California State Parks wanted to create digital content featuring real-time access to more of their park resources.
So, what was the solution? Zoom!
The program uses Zoom video out in the field and every device has Zoom installed on it for communicating and collaborating. On-site park interpreters, video messages to share with students, and interactive experiences are just a few of the benefits students can enjoy.
The PORTS program uses the Zoom platform to grant students the ability to interact with park professionals and the ability to experience California State Parks. This year alone, PORTS will exploit 2,000 individual presentations from 15 state parks for 75,000 students using Zoom! PORTS has a Program Coordinator that works with the schools to provide information about the platform and to help them utilize it efficiently. Teachers have limited to none IT staff, so it is very crucial for the platform to be user-friendly with as few connection issues as possible.
As you may know, the education industry is paramount for the future of our world. We need to ensure children have the ability to learn as much as possible about the earth, so we can keep it healthy.
Without Zoom, this program may not have lasted very long. Zoom helps businesses and organizations bring their teams together and accomplish more tasks.
